How to Use

  1. Measure uninterrupted wall spans - Enter the finished width where one balanced batten pattern actually begins and ends. Split walls at doors, full-height casing, corners, or other breaks instead of subtracting openings from one long span.
  2. Enter the actual batten face width - Use the installed face width, not a nominal lumber name. The calculator subtracts every batten face from the wall before it solves the clear spaces.
  3. Choose target spacing or a fixed count - Target spacing finds the nearest whole batten count for each wall. Fixed count keeps the exact count you enter and solves the spacing that fits.
  4. Choose the edge treatment - Battens at both edges starts and ends with a batten. Equal end spaces leaves the same clear gap at both wall boundaries and centers the full pattern between them.
  5. Review the drawing and stock plan - Use the wall preview, start marks, center marks, net batten length, and stock-board quantity as a layout and purchasing check. Verify field conditions and product instructions before installation.

What This Board & Batten Calculator Solves

This calculator is for layout and batten-material planning. It works for full-height accent walls, feature walls, and other evenly spaced batten layouts where you know the finished span and the actual face width of the battens.

It also provides useful layout math for exterior board-and-batten projects, but it does not replace the siding manufacturer's installation instructions. Exterior systems can have product-specific panel joints, fastening, sheathing, weather-resistive barrier, clearance, flashing, and batten requirements.

The calculator deliberately does not estimate generic siding panels or installed siding cost. Those are separate user jobs from placing battens accurately across a measured span.

Clear Spacing, Center Spacing, and Batten Marks

Clear spacing is the open distance between adjacent batten faces. Center-to-center spacing adds one batten width. CalcShed keeps full precision internally and rounds only the displayed dimensions.

Target Spacing vs. Fixed Batten Count

Target spacing is useful during design. Enter the clear space you would like between battens, and CalcShed tests nearby whole batten counts. It selects the count that produces the closest exact clear spacing for each wall.

Fixed batten count is useful when the visual count is already decided. Enter the number of battens on each wall, and the calculator solves the exact gap that fits the selected edge treatment.

A wall cannot use a fractional batten count. That is why the final exact spacing can differ from a target. The result shows the real solved spacing rather than presenting the target as though it fit perfectly.

Board & Batten Spacing Formulas

The spacing changes with the selected edge treatment:

Battens at both edges = (wall width - batten count × batten width) ÷ (batten count - 1)
Equal end spaces = (wall width - batten count × batten width) ÷ (batten count + 1)
Center-to-center spacing = clear gap + batten width
Batten start mark = first start + index × center-to-center spacing

Every batten position is calculated from the full-precision solved spacing. Display rounding is never fed back into the next position, so rounding error does not walk across the wall.

Battens at Both Edges vs. Equal End Spaces

Battens at both edges puts the first batten flush with the left layout boundary and the last batten flush with the right boundary. All clear spaces between the battens are equal.

Equal end spaces centers the pattern inside the wall span. The open gap before the first batten, every interior clear gap, and the open gap after the last batten are all identical.

Neither edge treatment is a universal installation requirement. Choose the one that matches the design and the actual boundaries of the wall. Exterior products can impose different joint or trim conditions, so the product instructions still control.

How to Measure Walls, Doors, Corners, and Casing

Measure the finished span where one continuous pattern can actually run. If a full-height door casing, built-in, fireplace surround, or other element interrupts the pattern, treat the sections on each side as separate wall spans.

Inside and outside corners deserve deliberate boundaries. Measure to the point where the visible batten layout is intended to stop, not automatically to the rough framing dimension behind trim.

Walls can be out of square and finished dimensions can vary from plan dimensions. Use field measurements for the layout and check the first and last few marks on the wall before batch cutting or fastening every batten.

Stock Board Planning, Saw Kerf, and Reserve Pieces

The stock planner converts vertical batten pieces into whole stock boards. For each wall definition, it determines how many full batten-height pieces fit into one stock board after the entered saw kerf is allowed between cuts.

Reserve material is handled as extra whole batten pieces before stock-board rounding. This is more useful for vertical battens than applying a percentage only to linear feet, because the project is purchased and cut as whole boards.

Stock planning is intentionally conservative across different batten heights. CalcShed does not reassign an offcut from one wall definition to a shorter wall definition. If you plan to reuse those offcuts, review the wall-by-wall cut yield and adjust the purchase quantity deliberately.

Stock Board Yield

Whole-board planning is kept separate from the wall-spacing geometry:

Planned batten pieces = exact layout battens + whole reserve pieces
Cuts per stock board = floor((stock length + saw kerf) ÷ (batten height + saw kerf))
Stock boards to plan = planned batten pieces ÷ cuts per stock board, rounded up
Unused stock length = whole stock length purchased - batten cuts - saw kerf between cuts

The stock planner requires one stock piece to be at least as long as the entered batten height. It does not infer vertical splices or reuse offcuts between different wall definitions.

Interior Board & Batten vs. Exterior Siding

Interior board-and-batten accent walls are often a finish-layout problem: choose the visible batten face width, balance the pattern, mark the wall, and cut the vertical strips to the required height.

Exterior board-and-batten siding is a building-envelope system. The visible spacing can still be laid out with the calculator, but siding panels or boards, battens, sheathing, fastening, joints, clearances, flashing, and the weather-resistive barrier must follow the exact product and project requirements.

That distinction is why CalcShed does not bake a manufacturer spacing, fastener schedule, panel width, or exterior waste percentage into the layout engine. The geometry can be universal; the installation specification is not.

How do I calculate equal board and batten spacing?

Subtract the total width occupied by the battens from the wall width, then divide the remaining width by the number of clear spaces. The number of clear spaces depends on the edge treatment: one fewer than the batten count when battens sit at both edges, or one more than the batten count when the pattern has equal open spaces at both ends.

Is board and batten spacing measured edge to edge or center to center?

Both measurements are useful, but they mean different things. Clear spacing is the open gap between batten faces. Center-to-center spacing is the distance between batten centerlines and equals the clear gap plus one batten width. CalcShed reports both.

How many battens do I need for a wall?

In target-spacing mode, CalcShed evaluates nearby whole batten counts and chooses the count whose exact clear spacing is closest to your target. In fixed-count mode, it uses the batten count you enter and solves the exact spacing.

Should there be a batten at each end of the wall?

Not necessarily. Some layouts begin and end with battens, while others are centered with equal open spaces at both wall edges. The calculator supports both treatments so the geometry matches the design boundaries you choose.

Does the calculator include doors and windows?

It does not subtract full-height interruptions from one continuous pattern. Split the project into separate wall spans at doors, casing, built-ins, or other boundaries so each visible section can be balanced independently.

Can I use this for exterior board-and-batten siding?

Use it for visible batten layout and material planning, but not as a substitute for the siding system installation instructions. Exterior products can have specific panel joints, battens, sheathing, fastening, flashing, clearance, and weather-resistive-barrier requirements.

Why does the exact spacing differ from my target?

The wall must use a whole number of battens. Target mode chooses the whole count that gets closest to the requested clear spacing, then reports the exact spacing that actually fits the measured wall.

Does stock-board quantity reuse offcuts between different walls?

No. Stock yield is calculated separately for each wall definition and batten height. This avoids claiming an offcut optimization that the calculator has not actually scheduled.
