How to Use
  1. Measure beds - length and width of each area. For irregular shapes, break into rectangles.
  2. Choose depth - 3 inches is the standard for most garden beds. 2 inches for top-up applications.
  3. See bags or yards - results show cubic yards plus 2 ft³ and 3 ft³ bag counts - one cubic yard equals 13.5 bags (2 ft³) or 9 bags (3 ft³).
  4. Keep waste low - 5% is enough for mulch - it doesn't compact like gravel.
  5. Bags vs. bulk - under 3 yd³ bags may be easier. Above 3 yd³ bulk delivery saves money.

Quick answer

One cubic yard of mulch covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep - the standard application - or 162 square feet at 2 inches for a top-up. A typical 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches takes just under 2 cubic yards, which is about 25 of the 2 cu ft bags. Past roughly 2 yards, bulk delivery beats bags on price. Enter your bed dimensions above for the exact yardage and bag count.

How Deep to Mulch

3 in2-3 in gap at stemsMulch1 yd³ covers ~108 ft² at 3 in · ~162 ft² at 2 in · ~81 ft² at 4 inSoil
Standard beds take 3 inches; refreshing an existing layer takes 2. Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from stems and trunks - piling it against bark traps moisture and invites rot and borers. Deeper is not better: past 4 inches, water and air stop reaching the roots.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard in bulk or by the bag (2 ft³ or 3 ft³). One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. The standard recommendation for garden beds is 3 inches of mulch - deep enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, but not so deep that it suffocates plant roots.

For annual top-ups on existing beds, 1 to 2 inches is usually sufficient. Over-mulching (more than 4 inches) can create moisture problems and volcano-mulching around tree trunks causes bark rot. Pull mulch back 3–4 inches from tree trunks and plant stems.

Mulch Types Compared

Choose based on appearance, longevity, and function:

Mulch TypeWeight per yd³LifespanCost/YardNotes
Shredded hardwood~650 lb1–2 years$25–$40Most popular - knits together, stays put
Pine bark nuggets~400 lb2–3 years$30–$45Floats in heavy rain - avoid on slopes
Cedar mulch~500 lb2–3 years$35–$50Natural insect deterrent
Dyed mulch (black/red)~650 lb1–2 years$30–$45Color fades in 6–12 months
Pine straw~80 lb6–12 months$15–$25Acidic - great for azaleas, blueberries
Rubber mulch~1,400 lb10+ years$80–$120Playgrounds - doesn't decompose

Organic mulches decompose and improve soil over time. Plan to replenish every 1–2 years. Non-organic options (rubber, stone) last longer but don't feed the soil.

Formula: bags × bag size (ft³) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard - use this table to compare bag vs bulk pricing.

Formulas

Simple volume math:

Volume (ft³) = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12)
Cubic yards = Volume ÷ 27
2 ft³ bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 2
3 ft³ bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 3

Mulch is light and doesn't compact significantly. A 5% waste factor covers most situations.

Mulch cost by type (2026 US prices)

Shredded hardwood (natural)$25-$45$4-$7General beds, trees, shrubs
Dyed hardwood (black, red, brown)$30-$55$4-$8Decorative beds, curb appeal

Pine straw$25-$40$5-$8 per baleSouthern US, slopes, natural areas
Rubber mulch$80-$160$8-$15Playgrounds, permanent low-maintenance

A full truckload (15 yd3) costs $375-$975 depending on type and region. Installation labor adds $30-$50/hr for spreading. One cubic yard covers 160 sq ft at 2 in deep or 108 sq ft at 3 in deep. Dyed mulch needs 1-2 dry days to cure after spreading - avoid rain during that window.

After You Know Your Yardage

Mulch usually lands after the bed itself is in shape. From here:

  1. Amend the soil firstIf the bed needs new soil under the mulch, figure that volume separately.
  2. Add compostA 1-2 inch compost layer under mulch feeds beds better than mulch alone.
  3. Compare stone mulchPea gravel never decomposes - price it against wood mulch for paths and xeriscapes.

Mulch works best over a prepared topsoil base. Browse our full landscaping calculator collection for topsoil, compost, and sod.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should mulch be around plants?
3 inches is ideal for most garden beds - deep enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, thin enough to allow air and water through. Keep mulch 3–4 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot. For new beds, start at 3–4 inches; for annual refresh, add 1–2 inches.
Is it cheaper to buy mulch in bags or bulk?
Bulk mulch is almost always cheaper for quantities above 2–3 cubic yards. Bagged mulch (2 cubic feet per bag) works out to $30–$60 per cubic yard at retail prices. Bulk mulch delivered costs $25–$45 per cubic yard depending on type and region. The crossover point is usually around 3 cubic yards - below that, bags may be more convenient; above that, bulk saves significant money.
How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Standard mulch bags are 2 cubic feet each, so it takes 13.5 bags (round up to 14) to make one cubic yard. If you need 3 cubic yards, that is 40–41 bags. For anything over 2 cubic yards, calling a landscape supplier for bulk delivery is usually faster and cheaper.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new?
Not usually. If existing mulch is less than 2–3 inches deep and not matted or diseased, simply top-dress with a fresh 1–2 inch layer. If the old mulch is matted, compacted, or showing signs of fungal growth (artillery fungus, slime mold), remove it first. Never let total mulch depth exceed 4 inches around plants - excessive mulch smothers roots and promotes rot at the base of trees and shrubs.
How deep should mulch be?
The target depth depends on the material. Shredded bark and wood chip mulch: 3 inches is the standard - thick enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, but not so thick it restricts air and water. Pine straw: 3–4 inches (it compacts). Rubber mulch: 3 inches for flower beds, 6 inches under play equipment for fall protection. Never mound mulch against tree trunks (volcano mulching) - keep a 3–4 inch gap around the base.
