How to Use

  1. Choose how you measured - enter bed dimensions or a known area. Add each separate bed to the same estimate.
  2. Pick the shape - use rectangle, circle, or tree ring for dimension-based areas.
  3. Enter mulch depth - measure the mulch already in place before deciding how much new material to add.
  4. Choose the bag size - select a common bag size or enter the volume printed on your product bag.
  5. Compare buying options - open Cost comparison only if you want to compare your local bag and bulk prices.

Quick answer

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. It covers about 162 ft² at 2 inches, 108 ft² at 3 inches, or 81 ft² at 4 inches. A cubic yard is exactly 13.5 of the 2 ft³ bags, so a whole-bag purchase requires 14 bags. Use the calculator above when your area, depth, bag size, or number of beds is different.

How to Measure a Mulch Bed

LengthWidthRectangleDiameterCircleOuter dia.Inner dia.Tree ring
Use the full bed dimensions, not the dimensions of the plants inside it. For a tree ring, enter the outside diameter of the mulched circle and the inside diameter you want to leave open around the trunk.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Mulch quantity is a volume calculation: bed area × mulch depth. Bulk mulch is usually quoted by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is labeled by cubic feet. The calculator keeps those units connected so you can measure the project once and compare either way of buying it.

If you already know the bed square footage, use Known area and skip the length and width fields. For several planting beds, add them to one estimate instead of doing separate calculations and adding the results by hand. For an irregular bed, split it into simple rectangles or circles and add those pieces without overlapping them.

Bag counts use 2 ft³ bags and are rounded up to whole bags. The cubic-yard figures are the calculated volume before any optional extra allowance.

From Area and Depth to Bags or Yards

Bed area (ft²) × depth (ft)depth in inches ÷ 12 = depth in feetCubic feet (ft³)total volume neededBulk deliveryft³ ÷ 27= cubic yardsBagged mulchft³ ÷ bag size= number of bagsRound bags and yards up to the next whole unit.1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
Area times depth gives cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 for bulk cubic yards, or by the bag size for the number of bags. Always round up to the next whole bag or yard.

Bags and Cubic Yards

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Divide 27 by the bag volume to find the exact number of bags per yard. A 2 ft³ bag gives 13.5 bags per cubic yard, while a 3 ft³ bag gives exactly 9 bags per cubic yard. When you are buying bags, round the final project total up to a whole bag.

Bag sizes are not universal. Iowa State University Extension notes that 2 ft³ and 3 ft³ bags are common, but other sizes are also sold. That is why the calculator includes a custom bag-size option.

Mulch Formulas

Use the same formulas the calculator uses:

Rectangle area = Length × Width
Circle area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²
Tree-ring area = π × [(Outer diameter ÷ 2)² - (Inner diameter ÷ 2)²]
Volume in cubic feet = Area (ft²) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
Exact bag equivalent = Cubic feet ÷ Bag size (ft³)

For shopping, the calculator rounds bag quantity up only after the total project volume has been calculated.

Choosing Mulch Depth

There is no single correct depth for every mulch and planting. Iowa State University Extension says many hardwood chipped or shredded mulches are spread 2 to 4 inches thick. Oregon State University Extension gives a more material-specific limit: bark should not exceed about 3 inches, while wood chips are commonly used about 3 to 4 inches deep.

Existing mulch counts toward the target depth. Check what is already on the bed before ordering a full new layer. Around trees and shrubs, University of Maryland Extension recommends keeping mulch shallow and away from the trunk rather than piling it against the bark.

Bagged Mulch or Bulk Delivery?

The cheaper option depends on your local prices, bag size, delivery charge, and the quantity you need. The optional Cost comparison uses the prices you enter instead of assuming one national crossover point. This matters because a low bulk price can still lose to bags on a small project after delivery is added.

This calculator is for mulch sold by volume. If you are planning decorative stone instead, use the river rock calculator because stone purchasing often depends on material density and weight as well as volume.

After You Know Your Yardage

Mulch usually lands after the bed itself is in shape. From here:

  1. Amend the soil firstIf the bed needs new soil under the mulch, figure that volume separately.
  2. Add compostA 1-2 inch compost layer under mulch feeds beds better than mulch alone.
  3. Compare stone mulchPea gravel never decomposes - price it against wood mulch for paths and xeriscapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 2 cubic foot bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide 27 by 2 and you get 13.5 bags. For a purchase, that means 14 whole 2 ft³ bags to equal or slightly exceed one cubic yard.
How many 3 cubic foot bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
Exactly 9 bags. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and 27 ÷ 3 = 9.
How many square feet does one yard of mulch cover?
About 162 ft² at 2 inches deep, 108 ft² at 3 inches, or 81 ft² at 4 inches. Coverage changes in direct proportion to the depth you choose.
How deep should mulch be?
It depends on the material and planting. Many chipped or shredded hardwood mulches are used in the 2 to 4 inch range. Existing mulch counts toward that depth, and mulch around trees should stay away from the trunk. Use the product or local Extension guidance when it is more specific.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new mulch?
Usually you should measure the existing layer first rather than automatically replacing it. If useful mulch remains, add only enough to reach the target depth. Oregon State Extension specifically recommends checking the existing bark or wood-chip depth before reapplying more.
Is bagged mulch or bulk mulch cheaper?
There is no universal crossover quantity because local bag prices, bulk price, bag size, sales, and delivery charges vary. Open Cost comparison in the calculator and enter the prices available to you.
Can I use this calculator for playground mulch?
Use it only for basic volume planning, not to choose a fall-protection depth. Playground surfacing has safety requirements that depend on the surfacing system and equipment. Follow the product manufacturer and applicable CPSC playground-safety guidance.
