Mulch Calculator
Estimate cubic yards and bags for one or more beds, circles, tree rings, or a known square footage.
Measure the existing layer before adding more mulch.
Use the volume printed on the bag. Common U.S. sizes include 2 ft³ and 3 ft³.
Default is 0%. Add extra only when you want a purchasing buffer.
Cost comparison optional local prices
Enter your own supplier or store prices. No national price assumptions are built into the calculator.
How to Use
- Choose how you measured - enter bed dimensions or a known area. Add each separate bed to the same estimate.
- Pick the shape - use rectangle, circle, or tree ring for dimension-based areas.
- Enter mulch depth - measure the mulch already in place before deciding how much new material to add.
- Choose the bag size - select a common bag size or enter the volume printed on your product bag.
- Compare buying options - open Cost comparison only if you want to compare your local bag and bulk prices.
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. It covers about 162 ft² at 2 inches, 108 ft² at 3 inches, or 81 ft² at 4 inches. A cubic yard is exactly 13.5 of the 2 ft³ bags, so a whole-bag purchase requires 14 bags. Use the calculator above when your area, depth, bag size, or number of beds is different.
How to Measure a Mulch Bed
How Much Mulch Do I Need?
Mulch quantity is a volume calculation: bed area × mulch depth. Bulk mulch is usually quoted by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is labeled by cubic feet. The calculator keeps those units connected so you can measure the project once and compare either way of buying it.
If you already know the bed square footage, use Known area and skip the length and width fields. For several planting beds, add them to one estimate instead of doing separate calculations and adding the results by hand. For an irregular bed, split it into simple rectangles or circles and add those pieces without overlapping them.
Mulch Coverage Quick Reference
| Area | 2 in deep | 3 in deep | 4 in deep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ft² | 0.62 yd³ (9 × 2 ft³ bags) | 0.93 yd³ (13 × 2 ft³ bags) | 1.23 yd³ (17 × 2 ft³ bags) |
| 250 ft² | 1.54 yd³ (21 bags) | 2.31 yd³ (32 bags) | 3.09 yd³ (42 bags) |
| 500 ft² | 3.09 yd³ (42 bags) | 4.63 yd³ (63 bags) | 6.17 yd³ (84 bags) |
| 1,000 ft² | 6.17 yd³ (84 bags) | 9.26 yd³ (125 bags) | 12.35 yd³ (167 bags) |
Bag counts use 2 ft³ bags and are rounded up to whole bags. The cubic-yard figures are the calculated volume before any optional extra allowance.
From Area and Depth to Bags or Yards
Bags and Cubic Yards
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Divide 27 by the bag volume to find the exact number of bags per yard. A 2 ft³ bag gives 13.5 bags per cubic yard, while a 3 ft³ bag gives exactly 9 bags per cubic yard. When you are buying bags, round the final project total up to a whole bag.
Bag sizes are not universal. Iowa State University Extension notes that 2 ft³ and 3 ft³ bags are common, but other sizes are also sold. That is why the calculator includes a custom bag-size option.
Cubic Yards to Mulch Bags
| Cubic yards | 1.5 ft³ bags | 2 ft³ bags | 3 ft³ bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 yd³ | 18 bags | 14 bags | 9 bags |
| 2 yd³ | 36 bags | 27 bags | 18 bags |
| 3 yd³ | 54 bags | 41 bags | 27 bags |
| 4 yd³ | 72 bags | 54 bags | 36 bags |
| 5 yd³ | 90 bags | 68 bags | 45 bags |
Whole-bag purchase counts are rounded up. Use Bags & Yards in the calculator for any other volume or bag size.
Mulch Formulas
Use the same formulas the calculator uses:
Circle area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²
Tree-ring area = π × [(Outer diameter ÷ 2)² - (Inner diameter ÷ 2)²]
Volume in cubic feet = Area (ft²) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
Exact bag equivalent = Cubic feet ÷ Bag size (ft³)
For shopping, the calculator rounds bag quantity up only after the total project volume has been calculated.
Choosing Mulch Depth
There is no single correct depth for every mulch and planting. Iowa State University Extension says many hardwood chipped or shredded mulches are spread 2 to 4 inches thick. Oregon State University Extension gives a more material-specific limit: bark should not exceed about 3 inches, while wood chips are commonly used about 3 to 4 inches deep.
Existing mulch counts toward the target depth. Check what is already on the bed before ordering a full new layer. Around trees and shrubs, University of Maryland Extension recommends keeping mulch shallow and away from the trunk rather than piling it against the bark.
Bagged Mulch or Bulk Delivery?
The cheaper option depends on your local prices, bag size, delivery charge, and the quantity you need. The optional Cost comparison uses the prices you enter instead of assuming one national crossover point. This matters because a low bulk price can still lose to bags on a small project after delivery is added.
This calculator is for mulch sold by volume. If you are planning decorative stone instead, use the river rock calculator because stone purchasing often depends on material density and weight as well as volume.
