How to Use
- Map the floor into depth zones - Use one zone for areas with a similar average fill depth. Split noticeably different low areas into separate zones instead of using the deepest point for the entire floor.
- Enter area and average depth - For each zone, enter the floor area and the average thickness of self-leveling material that zone needs. Use Quantity only for identical zones.
- Use the exact product label - Choose a current manufacturer preset or enter the square-foot coverage and the reference thickness printed together on your product package or technical data.
- Set any extra material allowance - The default is 0%. Add a reserve only when your measurements, placement plan, product guidance, or job conditions justify it.
- Review the zone breakdown - The calculator sums the physical volume from all zones first, then converts that project volume into whole bags. It does not round every zone separately.
Self-leveling material quantity depends on three things: the floor area, the average fill depth, and the exact product yield. For an uneven floor, one average depth can hide important variation. This calculator lets you split the project into depth zones, sums their material volume, converts the selected product's labeled coverage into a one-bag volume yield, and rounds the finished project to whole bags.
How to Measure an Uneven Floor for Self-Leveler
Establish the level plane you want to reach, then map the floor well enough to estimate how much fill different areas need. The deepest depression is not the average thickness for the whole room. If one part of the floor is shallow and another is much deeper, enter them as separate zones with their own areas and average fill depths.
The calculator area is the surface that will actually receive the selected self-leveling product. Enter Quantity only when several zones are genuinely identical in both area and average depth. This keeps the result auditable without forcing every user to recreate room geometry they may already know.
Average fill depth is a planning measurement, not a product approval. The selected product still has its own permitted thickness range, substrate requirements, primer instructions, mixing limits, working time, and installation procedure.

Why Product Coverage Must Include a Reference Thickness
A coverage number such as 45 or 58 square feet per bag only makes sense when it is paired with the thickness at which that coverage was measured. One bag contains a limited material volume, so doubling the application depth roughly halves the area that same bag can cover.
CalcShed converts the labeled coverage and its reference thickness into an equivalent material volume per bag. The project zones are converted into material volume the same way. Dividing total project volume by the selected bag yield produces the exact bag requirement before whole-bag rounding.
Bag weight does not safely replace product yield. Current manufacturer data show products with different bag weights, formulations, coverage, and permitted thickness ranges, so the calculator asks for label coverage instead of assuming that every 50-pound bag behaves the same way.

The calculator keeps zone geometry, product yield, and extra order allowance in separate steps:
One-bag labeled volume yield = Labeled coverage × label reference thickness
Project material volume = Sum of all zone material volumes
Exact base bags = Project material volume ÷ one-bag labeled volume yield
Base whole bags = Exact base bags, rounded up once
Bags to order = Exact base bags × (1 + extra material allowance), rounded up once
Weighted average depth = Project material volume ÷ total project area
Equivalent coverage at average depth = One-bag volume yield ÷ weighted average depth
Zone bag shares are shown for auditing, but the calculator does not round each zone to a whole bag. The project is combined first so identical product material can be used across the whole placement plan.

Coverage can change with substrate and installation conditions. Named presets help with planning, but current manufacturer instructions remain the project source of truth.
Extra Material and Optional Bag Pricing
The default extra material allowance is 0%. This keeps the base result tied to the measured zones and selected product yield. Add 5%, 10%, or a custom reserve only when your measurement uncertainty, placement method, handling losses, or project standard justifies it.
The allowance is applied to the exact project bag requirement before the final whole-bag rounding. It is not added separately to every zone, which would compound rounding and can overstate the purchase quantity.
Supplier pricing is optional and user-entered. If you enter a price per bag, CalcShed multiplies it by the final order quantity. The calculator does not supply a national market price or estimate installed labor.
Primer, Aggregate, Repairs, and Second Pours Are Separate Questions
Self-leveling products can have specific substrate preparation, primer, moisture, crack, joint, mixing, and placement requirements. Some products allow aggregate extension or deeper placement methods beyond their neat-pour range. Those rules vary too much to turn into one universal accessory formula.
This calculator therefore estimates the selected self-leveling material only. It does not automatically size primer, aggregate, moisture mitigation, grinding, crack repair, dams, finished flooring, or a second pour. Verify those items against the selected product and project conditions.
Worked Self-Leveling Examples
For 200 square feet at an average depth of 1/4 inch, using a product labeled for 48 square feet per bag at 1/8 inch, one bag represents 0.5 cubic foot of material. The floor needs about 4.167 cubic feet, or 8.33 exact bags, so the base purchase is 9 whole bags. With a 10% extra material allowance, the final order becomes 10 bags.
A variable floor can reach the same total more transparently with zones. One 100-square-foot zone averaging 1/8 inch plus another 100-square-foot zone averaging 3/8 inch also totals about 4.167 cubic feet. The weighted average depth is 1/4 inch, but the zone breakdown shows where that material is actually going.

Should I use the deepest low spot as the self-leveler depth?

Why does self-leveler coverage change with thickness?
