How to Use

  1. Enter dimensions - length, width, and thickness of your pour area.
  2. Select thickness - use presets for common projects or enter a custom depth.
  3. Set waste - 10% covers most situations. Increase for uneven ground.
  4. Read bag counts - the calculator compares 80, 60, 50, and 40 lb bag counts.
  5. Plan pallets or cost - use a product-specific pallet pack or your supplier quantity, then compare local bag pricing with ready-mix.

Quick answer

One cubic yard (27 ft³) takes about 45 bags of 80 lb concrete, 60 bags of 60 lb, 72 bags of 50 lb, or 90 bags of 40 lb. Common mixed yields are 0.60, 0.45, 0.375, and 0.30 ft³ per bag respectively. Enter your dimensions above for an exact count.

How the Bag Count Is Measured

LengthThicknessWidth
The calculator multiplies length × width × thickness to get the pour volume in cubic feet, then divides by each bag's yield - 0.60 ft³ for an 80 lb bag - to return the count. Round shapes like post holes and sonotubes use the same volume-to-bag step.

Concrete Bag Yield and Example Pallet Packs

Bag yield is tied to the product label. Pallet quantity is different: it is product- and SKU-specific, so bag weight alone does not tell you how many bags are on a pallet. These current manufacturer examples show why:

Bag / productMixed yieldBags per Cubic YardExample pallet pack
80 lb - QUIKRETE 50000.60 ft³45 bags42 bags/pallet
60 lb - QUIKRETE 50000.45 ft³60 bags56 bags/pallet
80 lb - QUIKRETE Crack Resistant0.60 ft³45 bags56 bags/pallet
50 lb - QUIKRETE Concrete Mix0.375 ft³72 bagsVerify exact SKU/supplier
40 lb - QUIKRETE Concrete Mix0.30 ft³90 bagsVerify exact SKU/supplier

Use the pallet planner above with a sourced product preset or the exact bags-per-pallet quantity from your supplier. Do not assume one pallet count applies to every 40, 50, 60, or 80 lb concrete product.

When to Use Bags vs. Ready-Mix

Bagged concrete makes sense for small projects where you need precision and flexibility - fence posts, small pads, repairs, and any pour under about 1 cubic yard. You can mix at your own pace and don't need to coordinate delivery timing.

As volume approaches 1 to 2 cubic yards, compare the bag total with a current ready-mix delivery quote. Delivery minimums, short-load charges, local material prices, and access conditions vary, so there is no single nationwide break-even price.

Base is the exact count (Volume ÷ 0.60); the +10% column adds a waste allowance - order that. Over ~90 bags, compare ready-mix.

Formulas Used in This Calculator

The calculator converts your dimensions to cubic feet, then divides by each bag's coverage:

Volume (ft³) = Length × Width × (Thickness ÷ 12)
With waste = Volume × (1 + Waste %)
80 lb bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.60
60 lb bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.45
50 lb bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.375
40 lb bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.30
Cubic yards = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27

Always round up to the next whole bag. Having one or two extra bags on hand is cheaper than making a second trip.

Spec & Standards Notes

  • Packaged dry concrete mix - its composition, compressive-strength classes, and bag labeling - is governed by ASTM C387/C387M. Most general-purpose bagged mixes are rated around 4,000 PSI at 28 days.ASTM C387/C387M
  • QUIKRETE Concrete Mix lists approximate mixed yields of 0.30 ft³ for 40 lb, 0.375 ft³ for 50 lb, 0.45 ft³ for 60 lb, and 0.60 ft³ for 80 lb bags. Use the actual product label when its stated yield differs.QUIKRETE Concrete Mix technical data
  • Pallet quantities are packaging specifications, not universal bag-weight rules. QUIKRETE 5000 lists 56 of the 60 lb bags or 42 of the 80 lb bags per pallet.QUIKRETE 5000 packaging
  • QUIKRETE Crack Resistant Concrete Mix lists 56 of its 80 lb bags per pallet, which is why an 80 lb bag weight alone cannot determine pallet quantity.QUIKRETE Crack Resistant packaging

After You Know Your Bag Count

Bag count is one piece of the pour. Here is the usual sequence from here:

  1. Size the footingsPost holes and pier footings under the slab are a separate pour - get their volume and bag count.
  2. Plan the rebarMost slabs over a few inches need a reinforcement grid; lay out bar spacing and total length.
  3. Price the finished slabCompare your bag total against a full installed concrete slab cost per square foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 80 lb bags of concrete make a yard?
It takes approximately 45 bags of 80 lb concrete to make one cubic yard. Each 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, and one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet (27 ÷ 0.6 = 45).
Can I mix different bag sizes together?
Different package sizes of the same compatible concrete mix can generally be combined when each batch is mixed and placed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume different formulations are interchangeable just because both products are sold as bagged concrete; strength class, additives, set time, fibers, yield, and water demand can differ.
What are the dimensions of a 60 lb concrete bag?
There is no reliable universal physical size for a 60 lb concrete bag. Package dimensions can vary by product, plant, packaging, and how the bag settles. Use the manufacturer or retailer specification for the exact SKU when storage, vehicle fit, or pallet dimensions matter.
What are the dimensions of an 80 lb concrete bag?
There is no single physical size or pallet quantity for every 80 lb concrete bag. Package dimensions and pallet packs vary by product and supplier. For example, QUIKRETE 5000 lists 42 of its 80 lb bags per pallet, while QUIKRETE Crack Resistant lists 56. Verify the exact SKU before planning storage, transport, or pallet quantities.
How many bags of concrete are on a pallet?
It depends on the exact product and SKU. Current manufacturer examples include 42 of the 80 lb or 56 of the 60 lb bags for QUIKRETE 5000, while QUIKRETE Crack Resistant lists 56 of its 80 lb bags per pallet. Use the pallet planner above with a sourced preset or your supplier's exact pack quantity.
How much concrete does a bag yield?
Bag yield depends on the product, but QUIKRETE Concrete Mix lists approximate mixed yields of 0.60 ft³ for 80 lb, 0.45 ft³ for 60 lb, 0.375 ft³ for 50 lb, and 0.30 ft³ for 40 lb bags. Check the exact product label and use its stated yield when it differs.
