How to Measure Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run, like 4/12 or 7/12. It describes how much the roof rises vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Pitch affects roof surface area, material waste, and what products can be used on a roof.

The most reliable way to measure pitch is from inside the attic: place a level horizontally against a rafter, measure 12 inches out, then measure the vertical rise at that point. You can also estimate pitch from outside using a pitch gauge or a smartphone inclinometer app.

Pitch Formulas

The pitch multiplier comes from the Pythagorean theorem applied to the roof triangle:

Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
Roof angle = arctan(rise ÷ 12)
Roof area (ft²) = Footprint area × Pitch multiplier
Squares = Roof area ÷ 100
Slope (%) = (rise ÷ 12) × 100

For a 6/12 pitch: √(1 + (6/12)²) = √(1 + 0.25) = √1.25 = 1.118. This means the actual roof surface is 11.8% larger than the flat footprint.

How do I measure roof pitch from the ground?
