How to Use

  1. Choose the planting shape - Use Rectangle or Circle for an edge-aware layout, Known area when the exact boundary is unavailable, or Single row / hedge for a one-dimensional planting line.
  2. Enter center-to-center spacing - Use the spacing from the exact plant label, planting plan, or other plant-specific source. CalcShed does not prescribe a universal species spacing.
  3. Set the edge-center setback - For measured shapes, the default half-spacing option keeps boundary plant centers half a spacing from the edge. Zero and custom setbacks are available when your layout calls for them.
  4. Choose square or staggered layout - Square rows use the same spacing in both directions. Triangular rows are staggered by half the spacing and use a row gap of about 0.866 times the center spacing.
  5. Review the plan, not just the count - Check the alternate pattern, row/orientation details, and plan preview. Finite bed edges can change the whole-plant result compared with a simple plants-per-square-foot formula.

Plant quantity depends on the center-to-center spacing, the usable planting shape, the distance from the bed edge to the first plant centers, and whether rows are square or staggered. Measured rectangles, circles, and planting lines can be counted from exact center positions under the selected layout convention. Known-area mode uses a density estimate because the boundary shape is not known.

Plant Spacing Is Measured Center to Center

Plant spacing is normally described from the center of one plant to the center of the next. UF/IFAS landscape-design guidance uses on-center spacing this way and represents mature plant width at scale when drawing a planting plan. Alabama Cooperative Extension likewise tells users to measure spacing from plant centers and to read the plant label for the actual spacing.

That is why this calculator asks you for the spacing instead of selecting a species and pretending one number is correct everywhere. Use the exact plant label, design plan, nursery information, or current plant-specific guidance. Mature spread, cultivar, site conditions, maintenance goals, and planting purpose can all affect the spacing you choose.

Square and Staggered Plant Spacing

Square spacing uses the selected center spacing in both directions. In an equilateral triangular layout, alternate rows shift by half the spacing and the row-to-row distance is spacing × √3/2, about 0.866 × spacing.

Why Exact Bed Edges Change the Plant Count

Plants-per-square-foot formulas describe density, but a real bed has edges. Whole rows have to fit between those edges, and the first plant centers may be set back from the boundary. Two calculators can therefore return different whole-plant counts even when both use the same square or triangular density formula.

For rectangles and circles, CalcShed counts actual plant-center positions that fit inside the selected edge-center setback. The default Half spacing option is a transparent CalcShed layout convention that gives boundary plants a balanced half-spacing share at the edge. It is not a horticultural recommendation. Choose Zero or Custom when your project uses a different edge rule.

Known-area mode cannot know where those edges fall, so it uses the standard density equation and labels the result as an estimate rather than inventing rows and coordinates.

Edge Setback Means Edge to Plant Center

The setback is measured from the planting-bed boundary to a plant center. After fitting whole spacing intervals, CalcShed centers any leftover slack so the exact lattice stays balanced inside the usable boundary.

Plant Spacing Formulas

The calculator separates density formulas from exact boundary placement:

Square density area per plant = spacing × spacing
Triangular density area per plant = spacing × 0.8660254 × spacing
Triangular row spacing = spacing × √3 ÷ 2 ≈ spacing × 0.8660254
Known-area plant estimate = planting area ÷ area per plant, rounded up
Rectangle square columns or rows = floor(usable dimension ÷ spacing) + 1
Single row / hedge count = floor((line length − 2 × end setback) ÷ spacing) + 1
Plants to buy = layout or base estimate × (1 + optional extra-plants allowance), rounded up

Rectangle and circle modes count discrete plant centers rather than simply rounding an area-density quotient. Triangular rectangle mode can also compare the two row orientations because finite edges can change the total.

Which Planting Mode Should You Use?

Choose the mode that matches the geometry you actually know:

If you can measure the actual rectangle, circle, or line, use that geometry instead of Known area. The boundary-aware result is more informative than density alone.

Square vs. Staggered Does Not Always Mean 15% More Plants

The theoretical triangular density is about 15.47% higher than square spacing at the same center distance because each plant uses about 86.6% as much plan area. That does not guarantee 15% more whole plants in every finite bed.

Rows and columns are integers. A small bed can keep the same number of rows after staggering, or an offset row can lose an edge plant. In some shapes the staggered count can therefore be only slightly higher, equal, or even lower under the same edge rule. The calculator shows the alternate pattern instead of hiding that boundary effect.

For rectangular staggered layouts, rotating the row direction can also change the count. Auto orientation calculates both directions and uses the one with the larger exact center count, while reporting the alternate orientation for comparison.

Optional Spare Plants and Nursery Pricing

The default extra-plants allowance is 0%. That keeps the base result tied to the actual selected layout or density estimate. Add 5%, 10%, or a custom reserve only when your project standard, replacement plan, installation risk, or purchasing strategy justifies it.

Optional pricing uses only the price per plant that you enter. CalcShed does not assume a national nursery price or claim that a particular spare-plant percentage is universally appropriate.

Worked Plant Spacing Examples

A 10 × 6 foot rectangular bed with 24-inch spacing and a half-spacing edge setback fits 5 columns by 3 rows in a square grid, or 15 plants. Under the same edge rule, the staggered layout fits 14 plants in its better orientation. This is a good example of why finite edges can defeat the simple expectation that staggered always adds plants.

A larger 20 × 10 foot rectangle at 18-inch spacing and a half-spacing edge setback fits 78 plants in a square grid. The better staggered orientation fits 88 plants because the tighter 0.866 × spacing row gap crosses additional whole-row thresholds.

If all you know is 100 square feet and 18-inch spacing, Known area mode estimates 45 plants for square spacing and 52 for triangular spacing. Those are density estimates; the exact result for a real bed can differ once its shape and edge setback are known.
