How to Use

- Choose granular or liquid - Liquid products need a weight-per-gallon or kilograms-per-liter value because N-P-K analysis is expressed by weight.
- Review all nutrients applied - The result shows the product amount plus nitrogen, phosphate, and potash delivered by the same application. Optional package details convert the exact product amount into whole bags or containers.
To calculate lawn fertilizer, divide the nutrient rate you need by that nutrient's decimal percentage in the fertilizer analysis, then scale the product rate to your lawn area. For example, supplying 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² with a 24-0-11 fertilizer requires about 4.17 lb of product per 1,000 ft². A 5,000 ft² lawn would use about 20.83 lb of product before any package rounding.
How to Read the Three Fertilizer Numbers
The three prominent numbers on a fertilizer label are percentages by weight. They represent nitrogen (N), available phosphate expressed as P₂O₅, and soluble potash expressed as K₂O. A 24-0-11 fertilizer is therefore 24% nitrogen, 0% phosphate, and 11% potash by weight.
The calculator keeps those three nutrients separate. If you target nitrogen, it solves the product amount from the nitrogen percentage and then reports how much phosphate and potash are delivered at the same time. You can instead target P₂O₅ or K₂O when a soil test or turf plan gives one of those rates.

Plan mode works backward from the nutrient rate you want, while Check mode works forward from the amount of product you already applied:
Product needed for lawn = Product rate × lawn area ÷ 1,000 ft²
Each nutrient rate = Product rate × nutrient percentage ÷ 100
Each nutrient total = Nutrient rate × lawn area ÷ 1,000 ft²
Liquid product weight = Liquid volume × product weight per gallon
Whole bags or containers = Exact product amount ÷ package size, rounded up
Metric inputs are converted to one canonical calculation basis and converted back for display. Package rounding does not change the exact application-rate math.
From Nutrient Target to Product Amount
Plan an Application or Check What You Applied
Plan an application when you know the lawn area, fertilizer analysis, and a nutrient rate from a soil test, product direction, or turf-management recommendation. Choose the nutrient that controls the calculation, then CalcShed solves the product rate and total product amount.
Check an application when the fertilizer has already been spread or sprayed. Enter the actual product amount and treated area. The calculator converts that amount into product rate plus the N, P₂O₅, and K₂O rates delivered per 1,000 ft² or per 100 m².
These two modes intentionally do not choose a nutrient target for you. Grass species, season, soil conditions, local nutrient restrictions, fertilizer release characteristics, and existing soil fertility can all change an appropriate application plan.
Liquid Fertilizer Needs Weight per Gallon
A fertilizer guaranteed analysis is expressed by weight, not by fluid volume. For a liquid product, gallons alone are not enough to calculate how many pounds of nitrogen, phosphate, or potash are present. Enter the product weight per gallon from the label or technical information so the calculator can convert liquid volume to product weight first.
In metric mode, enter kilograms per liter. CalcShed converts that density internally and reports the result in metric units. Do not substitute water density unless the fertilizer manufacturer explicitly provides a compatible value.

Nitrogen and Phosphate Warnings Are Review Flags, Not Universal Limits
Purdue University turf guidance states that a good rule is not to apply more than 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² in one application. CalcShed uses that figure only as a visible review flag. It is not presented as a nationwide legal limit or a universal recommendation.
Local rules can be stricter. For example, Pennsylvania currently limits turf fertilizer applications under its fertilizer law and restricts phosphate use in many established-turf situations. Other states and municipalities use different requirements. Product labels can also impose their own directions and maximum rates.
For that reason, CalcShed calculates the amount you request but does not silently cap or alter it. If the result supplies more than the Purdue nitrogen reference, or supplies any P₂O₅, the result tells you to review the applicable label, soil-test basis, and local rule before application.
Worked Lawn Fertilizer Examples
For a 5,000 ft² lawn using 24-0-11 fertilizer and a user-supplied target of 1.0 lb N per 1,000 ft², the product rate is 1.0 ÷ 0.24 = 4.17 lb per 1,000 ft². Multiply by five to get about 20.83 lb of fertilizer. That same application supplies about 0.46 lb K₂O per 1,000 ft².
For an 8,000 ft² lawn using 16-8-8 and a target of 0.75 lb N per 1,000 ft², the product rate is 4.6875 lb per 1,000 ft² and the total is 37.5 lb. The same product also delivers 0.375 lb P₂O₅ and 0.375 lb K₂O per 1,000 ft².
If 20 lb of 25-5-10 fertilizer was actually applied over 5,000 ft², Check mode reports a product rate of 4 lb per 1,000 ft². That equals 1.0 lb N, 0.20 lb P₂O₅, and 0.40 lb K₂O per 1,000 ft².

How do I calculate pounds of fertilizer for my lawn?

No. Spreader settings depend on the exact fertilizer, spreader model, granule characteristics, calibration, and walking speed. Use the product label and calibrate the spreader for the calculated product rate.
Should I round to whole fertilizer bags?
The application math uses the exact amount of product needed. If you enter a bag or container size, the calculator separately rounds the purchase quantity up to whole packages so package rounding does not inflate the nutrient application rate.
